NOVICE
A novice-level singer usually demonstrates a fair amount of talent and has had encouragement from friends or family to pursue singing, or they wouldn't seek voice training in the first place.  Singers that fit this profile have had relatively little stage or performance experience (if any), and little-to-no private instruction.  While not a remedial student, they are usually somewhat new to singing and fit many aspects of the following profile:

  • Little-to-no performance experience (outside of karaoke, high school productions, family events, etc.)
  • Decent pitch accuracy
  • Ability to sustain a held tone for three-five seconds with little variance in timbre or frequency
  • Limited range
  • Poor control over registration, often with one dominance ("head" or "chest" voice) being stronger than the other
  • Significant levels of tension and/or inefficiency in vocalism, especially at extremely high ranges
  • Little control over vibrato or ability to recognize it when present in the sound
  • Laryngeal elevation as pitch escalates
  • Highly self-conscious of their own sound resulting in poor ability to fully communicate text
